Free Consultation
I offer a free consultation to dog guardians living within the I-435 loop of the Kansas City, Missouri metropolitan area. Call, text or email me and we’ll schedule a consultation at a mutually agreeable day and time.
For the consultation: I come to your house or apartment, meet you and your dog, get detailed information about your training goals and observe your dog’s behavior. Once I’ve gained all the information I need, I’ll give you my recommendations for moving forward with training.
Before you commit to training with me, look at other trainers and their philosophies. Check out my Google reviews. Read what past clients have said. Check out my Facebook and Instagram posts.
After meeting with me and vetting my background, you’ll discover that earning your dog’s trust is my first step toward achieving successful training. Ensuring your satisfaction with my training is of utmost importance.
*Outside the I-435 loop, the consult fee is $75 to cover gas and drive time.
Positive Reinforcement Dog Training
I use only positive reinforcement when training dogs. Rewarding appropriate behavior with a dog’s most favorite item (food, praise, affection, play, belly rubs, your attention, etc.) increases the likelihood that the good behavior will continue.
Conversely, ignoring inappropriate behavior results in getting rid of unwanted displays. For instance, you walk into your house after getting off work. As you open the door, your dog immediately jumps on you because he wants your attention. Making eye contact, laughing and talking to him while he does this only encourages the jumping. If you consistently ignore him (this includes no eye contact, no talking, no gesturing toward him – basically ignoring his existence), he’ll figure out jumping isn’t working to get your attention. When he displays good behavior such as sitting, and then you reward him, you’re reinforcing the behavior you want to see.
Everyone in your household needs to respond to your dog the same way. If you allow your dog to jump on you, he’ll want to jump on everyone. However, if you ignore him when he jumps on you, everyone needs to ignore him to deter the jumping behavior. Consistency is key. Behave toward him the same way every time. He’ll get the message. Dogs are really good at figuring out what to do to get the reward.
Dogs Are Furry Toddlers
They have similar intelligence levels to 2- to 3-year-old humans. I know this because I used to teach music to young preschoolers. Transitioning from teaching preschool music to training dogs was an easy move – I’m just dealing with a different species😉.
Dogs don’t have the human capacity for complex thinking, such as reasoning, feeling guilt, shame or spite. If your dog “appears” guilty after destroying your favorite throw pillows, he’s responding more to your tense body language and angry tone of voice instead of the act of ruining your pillows. He doesn’t understand that de-stuffing pillows is wrong – he views them as prey and is practicing parts of the predator sequence, such as hunt, kill and dissect.
Just as you would baby-proof your house, you have to dog-proof it as well. Keep valuable items out of reach of your dog and put up baby gates to prevent your dog’s access to specific rooms of your house.
